Founded in 1911, UPORTO is one of the most prestigious Portuguese universities, responsible for 24.8% of all scientific production. Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences (FPCEUP), with international reputation in training and research in the fields of psychology and education, is committed to the highest standards of education and R&I with strong focus on knowledge transfer and social progress.

The Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE) is a research institution based at FPCEUP, and the highest ranked institution (ex aequo) in Portugal in the field of Educational Research (last national Research assessment process). CIIE develops high quality research on key issues of change, educational and social processes, to expand the role of education in promoting equity, inclusion, and active citizenship. Created in 1988, it has a long track-record of excellence in research and training on a wide range of educational and social issues from early years to higher education. With 70 full members, in a welcoming and stimulating environment, CIIE has been able to consolidate high level of scientific and implementation capacity, with a vast network of (inter)national partnerships. CIIE currently operates in nine strategic areas: (1) Engagement of Vulnerable Young People in Education and Training; (2) Contemporary Educational Challenges for Migrants and Refugees; (3) Empowerment and Inclusion Through Digital Education and Arts; (4) Citizenship, Communication and Literacy in Health and Wellbeing; (5) Higher Education, Innovation and Diversity; (6) Community Education, Participation and Social Change; (7) Training, Equity and the Teaching Profession; (8) Evaluation and Public Policies in Education; (9)n Pedagogical Management and Democratic Participation.
